Banpu and Mahidol Mark Commitment with “Power Green Camp 16”; Students Invited to Add Limitless Online Learning Experiences under the Theme “ECO Living & Learning – Transforming into a Green Lifestyle in Response to the New Normal” Era

Banpu Public Company Limited, a leading international versatile energy provider, together with the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, opened the Power Green Camp 16, which was held through online platform for the first time under the theme “ECO Living & Learning – Transforming into a Green Lifestyle in Response to the New Normal” Era. By selecting 40 students from 40 high schools in 31 provinces of any major (for the first time), which were selected from over 200 applicants across the country. The participants are allowed to experience this year’s camp in an unusually interesting new normal way to realize the power of learning without limits during the weekend, from October 16 to November 21, 2021. They will learn how to live their daily life in more environmentally friendly way from experts as well as environmental gurus through various learning activities both theoretically and practically, which can be applied in the current situation. In addition, the camp also has  sets of equipment for scientific experiments delivered to the students’ home.

Mr. Rattapon Sukhunthee, Head of Corporate Communications at Banpu Public Company Limited said “For Banpu, we believe that “Learning is the power of change and development”. Despite the difficult COVID-19 situation which makes it harder for us to conduct our usual Power Green Camp physically which we have done over the past 15 years, Banpu and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, are still committed to continue the camp this year but through online platforms to share knowledge about the environment to students across the country. And we have not limited applicants’ qualifications to only those who studied science major. If they are interested in science and environmental issues, they can apply. The camp will allow them to learn how to live in an environmentally friendly approach, which is in line with Banpu’s sustainability principles or ESG. And in order to make activities more effective, we have put our focus on designing activities that students will receive both knowledge and experiences through integrated learning activities both in theory and in practice as we have delivered them with a few sets of science experiment kits to be in use when participating in the project. We will also have experienced teachers to guide and give advice throughout all activities very closely.”

As president of the Power Green Camp 16, Assistant Professor Dr. Kritana Prueksakorn, lecturer at the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, said “Amidst the pandemic when every country around the world must adapt to the new normal to restore the economy and adjust their lifestyles, environmental issues is still inevitably important. We still have natural disasters, environmental pollution, degradation of natural resources, the loss of biodiversity and many more. These issues tend to be worse and even more severely because of human activities that play an important role in creating negatively incremental impact to the environment. And especially over the past year with the pandemic, it did reflect the cause of environmental problems in daily life from increasing waste problem to huge amount of food waste. We can, therefore, say that all these problems are close to everyone. To encourage young generations to better understand the problems, giving them knowledge and urging them to take a step forward to participate and come up with ideas to solve the problems would have been a great way to let them see the importance of environmental issues. This is the key to the theme of this year’s camp for us.”

For the activities in the Power Green Camp 16, we started from the beginning through transformative learning activities to train students with soft skills including creativity, analytical thinking and problem solving as well as effective communication. We also encourage them to get to know new friends from all over the country in the camp to practice how to collaborate with others before entering the next learning activities. Highlights are practice activities conducted through 3 standardized experimental activities that can be used in real households worth a total of THB 10,000 per person, which the camp has delivered to their homes free of charge.

The first activity is “Just Block, We Won’t Wait” which will allow the students to learn about wastewater, wastewater treatment and the invention of grease traps for household use. The second activity is “Food Waste Transformation” to learn about waste management and the conversion of food waste into organic fertilizer by Dr. Narin Boontanon from Mahidol University.

The next activity is “Is It Really There…?” activity by Asst. Prof. Dr. Monthira Yutitham from Mahidol University. It is a survey of composition and properties of soil in the house, which is a great knowledge to learn during COVID-19 situation, a time when everyone stays at home more, and plant a garden or vegetable gardens more. Another learning activity is “The Importance of Communication” by Ajarn May or Dr. Chanokporn Puapattanakul from Mahidol University. It is a practice of presentation skill which is a skill that enhances better personality and also something that students can apply when they present their projects in the camp as well as for their future uses.

40 students will take knowledge gathered from all learning activities to develop environmental science group projects, which are parts of a final activity of Power Green Camp. Each group of         4 students, 10 teams in total, must make a video clip of up to 5 minutes to present ideas, activities, projects or inventions on the topic of “ECO Living & Learning – Transforming into a Green Lifestyle in Response to the New Normal”. The aim of this activity is to encourage the participants to integrate all knowledge gained from the camp in the most comprehensive way possible.

The presentation of the environmental science group project for students attending the Power Green Camp16  will be held on Sunday, 21 November 2021. The camp will present scholarships to the teams that present their outstanding results with 4 awards plus one popular award. The total value of the prize is more than THB 100,000.
