“The Power Green Camp 5” offers opportunity for Thai youth to learn about Biodiversity during the October school break
Mahidol University’s Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies and Banpu Public Company Limited invite 11th grade students majoring in science nationwide to learn more about “Biodiversity Creating a Livable World” at “The Power Green Camp 5.” Students can apply from 1 to 31 July, 2010.
“Envi-Science: Learning Through Actions” has been the concept of the Camp for five consecutive years. This year, the Camp will take place during 18-24 October 2010, at the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, Salaya Campus, Nakhon Pathom with the theme “Biodiversity Creating a Livable World.” Throughout the one-week activity, participants will have the chance to attend special lectures and workshops on biodiversity by well-known environmental science experts and also gain hands-on experience at Mahidol University’s advanced environmental science lab. Additionally, they will join a field trip to environmental science learning sites in Khao Yai National Park, publicly exhibit their own environmental science projects and enjoy many other activities.

“We are committed to encouraging Thai youth to apply environmental science knowledge to help resolve environmental problems in their local communities in a sustainable, systematic and pragmatic manner. This year, we are offering the opportunity for The Power Green Camp 5’s
members who have green hearts and are interested in environmental science to continue their studies in the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University,” said Asst Prof. Sittipong Dilokwanich Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, the organizer of the camp.
The dean also explained the reason to bring up “Biodiversity” as the theme for this year’s camp was due to its importance to life on earth. If there is an imbalance in biodiversity or biodiversity is lost, all life on the planet would be in jeopardy. The United Nations declared 2010 as the international year of
biodiversity, aiming to promote the importance of biodiversity and the existence of all life on earth among the world’s population.
“If we destroy our natural surroundings, even minimally, it may have an adverse impact on our entire planet. In addition, environmental devastation by humans anywhere in the world may destroy biodiversity across the world. It can be considered chaos theory or the butterfly effect,” added Asst Prof. Sittipong.
Ms. Udomlux Olarn, Head of Corporate Affairs, Banpu Public Company Limited, which has been the sole sponsor of “The Power Green Camp” for the past five years, said, “The Power Green Camp is one of Banpu’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, which is in line with its long term CSR concept, “Banpu Education for Sustainability”. The Power Green Camp is another way to study environmental science and is open to youth to learn sustainable ways to resolve environmental problems, both through classroom instruction and out-of-class practice.
“Since we believe education is not restricted only to the classroom, the Power Green Camp 5 teaches the students about actual and real-world practices, as well as other skills including teamwork, leadership and creativity, so they can develop themselves and benefit through further environmental

The Power Green Camp is an environmental science camp aiming to create environmental science knowledge and understanding as well as to help guide young participants to learn more about systematic solutions to environmental problems. Various field activities and theoretical lectures are
organized to ensure that participants, who are the future of the nation, embrace a responsibility towards sustainable environmental conservation.
Interested students should have the following qualifications:
Be 11th grade students, majoring in science, and with the 10th grade minimum accumulated GPAX
of 2.75 (attach transcript))
Write an essay in your own handwriting on “Biodiversity in My Hometown Helps Create a Livable World.” The essay should be no longer than one A4 page
Provide documents to certify the applicant’s participation in any contest or science project or any related environmental activities, if any.
A guardian consent letter.
