Banpu and Mahidol Launch “The Power Green Camp 2” Promoting Environmental Science Learning Following the Kings Footsteps Among Youth to Commemorate HM the King Bhumibols 80th Anniversary

Banpu Public Company Limited in collaboration with the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University jointly announce the launch of “The Power Green Camp 2” to be held in middle October this year. “The Power Green Camp 2” aims to encourage Thai youth to employ environmental science for sustainable environment, following HM the King Bhumibol’s footsteps in the occasion of HM the King’s 80th birthday anniversary. “The Power Green Camp 2” currently calls for young science enthusiasts studying in 11th grade, majoring in science, to submit an essay on ““Applying Science Following His Majesty the King’s Footsteps for Sustainable Environment” and academic records by July 20, 2007.

“The Power Green Camp” project – The Envi-Science: Learning Through Actions is back again after an overwhelming response for “The Power Green Camp 1” last year. This year, “The Power Green Camp 2” jointly celebrates the auspicious occasion of HM the King Bhumibol’s 80th anniversary where the camp participants will not only learn about science and environmental technology, but also about how to apply environmental science with HM the King’s sufficiency economy for sustainable conservation of natural resources and environment in addition to theoretical learning from renowned environmentalists and having hands-on experience in Mahidol University’s advanced environmental science lab.

“To join the entire nation in celebrating HM the King’s 80th anniversary, “The Power Green Camp” aims to encourage young participants to learn and apply environmental science to sustainable environment conservation, following HM the King’s initiatives in environment conservation and self-sufficient living. The sufficiency economy principle will be included in all activities to build understanding on environmental science among youth as well as to have the next generation apply sufficient economy to their daily lives and for sustainable environment,” said Associate Prof. Dr. Anuchat Poungsomlee, Dean of Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University.

Associate Prof. Dr. Anuchat added that “The Power Green Camp” is organized around the three pillars – educational integration, learning from hands-on experience and empowering life and creativity. With the three pillars combined with curriculums, knowledge and activities tailored for this camp, the participants will become knowledgeable and capable of properly applying the theoretical learning to their real actions. They will also be able to contribute to the better and sustainable environment development as well as to further transfer their knowledge to others.

Mrs. Udomlax Olarn, Vice President – Corporate Communications, Banpu Public Company Limited, the major sponsor of “The Power Green Camp” project, said that nowadays environmental problem has become a global issue. Global warming, water, air and noise pollutions have become worse and widespread. Providing knowledge and education on environmental science and encouraging young generation to embrace environment and natural resource conservation practice into their daily lives would help develop youngsters who have strong ability to systematically analyze and solve the environmental problems appropriately.

“Young students participating in “The Power Green Camp 2” program will also have the opportunity to learn about HM the King’s initiative and philosophy on sufficiency economy,” said Mrs. Udomlux. “We believe that the activities related to sufficiency economy philosophy will make the camp more interesting and valuable. The participants will later be committed to contributing to the sustainable environmental conservation.”

Students eligible to participate in “The Power Green Camp 2” must be 11th grade students, majoring in science, with minimum accumulated GPAX of 2.75. Interested persons must submit an A4-page essay on “Applying Science Following His Majesty the King’s Footsteps for Sustainable Environment”.
