ITM has implemented sustainable community development programs for the communities surrounding ITM’s mine sites. These programs are the Company’s commitment to maximizing local potentials in terms of economic, educational, socio-cultural, health, environmental and infrastructural development. At the same time, the Company has taken steps in disaster relief efforts by providing emergency response and aid to help alleviate people’s suffering and rebuild the economy.
Economic Development and Revenue Generation
ITM has rolled out a number of programs to maximize local economic potentials and boost income within the community, including:
Career Development Program for Housewives Groups
ITM strives to improve income generation for groups of housewives in the communities around the Jorong mine. In 2018, a group of local residents was trained to produce fish crackers, which later helped them generate more than IDR 27,000,000 (approx. THB 59,000) per year.
Career Development Program for Fishers
ITM has initiated career development programs for local fishers around the Embalut mine since 2015. As a result, the fishing community has obtained better management skills and been able to sell their products directly to the market without depending on intermediaries. In 2018, a group of local fishers joined the program and reportedly generate an income of IDR 51,000,000 (approx. THB 111,264) per year.
Organic fertilizer production
ITM held a training session on organic fertilizer production with a group of farmers in Karangrejo, which resulted in the production of 17 tons of organic fertilizer a month at the price of IDR 1.5 million (approx. THB 3,272) per ton. The main customer was Jorong Mine, which used the fertilizer for rehabilitation of the facilities.
Layer poultry farming
The Company collaborated with local mining contractors to support their role as egg suppliers. By providing them with construction materials for layer poultry farming facilities and farming management training, the individuals were able to earn additional income for their living.
