Banpu Envisions Toward “Reliable and Clean” Energy Future, Boosting Up BESS in Strategic Markets

Banpu Public Company Limited is accelerating the execution of its Energy Symphonics strategy, advancing its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) business under the Renewables+ portfolio to deliver reliable and clean energy that generates cash flow and responds to the surging global energy demand driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing number of data centers worldwide. The business movement reflects Banpu’s strong vision as ‘a leading versatile energy company’ in focusing on decarbonization towards the path to Net Zero while optimizing various sources of energy to benefit the Company’s stakeholders through a balanced and sustainable approach.

Mr. Sinon Vongkusolkit, Chief Executive Officer of Banpu Public Company Limited, said, “Banpu capitalized on businesses that support our Net Zero target by 2050; particularly in BESS technology, which is emerging as a gamechanger, adopted by many countries to support renewable energy integration and enhance grid stability, along with AI technology optimization in energy management, improving the efficiency of both energy storage and distribution. Our investments in battery farms have now expanded in our strategic countries including Japan and Australia, which strongly promote clean energy policies and liberalized electricity markets that foster growth. This serves as a significant opportunity to support our business growth and deliver long-term value to our shareholders.”

Banpu’s BESS businesses in the two countries have made progress in the past quarter with the development of ‘Kamigumi-Tokyo BESS’ project between Banpu Japan K.K. and Kamigumi Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese logistics company; the achieved commercial operation of ‘Tono BESS’ project with the capacity of 58 megawatt-hours in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, as Banpu NEXT’s first large-scale battery energy storage system project; and the signing of a joint development of ‘Wooreen Energy Storage System: WESS’ project between Banpu Energy Australia Pty Limited (BEN) and EnergyAustralia, a prominent electricity generator and retailer in Australia.

*BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is a large-scale battery energy storage system which is a business in the liberalized power markets for private energy producers. The battery stores energy from various sources during the period of high production and supply electricity to the commercial grid during the period of surging energy demand. This technology plays a crucial role in enhancing security and reliability of electricity supply, particularly for electricity produced from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
