Banpu Organizes “Power Green Camp 17” Themed “Climate Change, We Must Change”

Banpu Public Company Limited, a leading international versatile energy provider, and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, launched the Power Green Camp 17 under the theme “Climate Change, We Must Change.” The event allows students to learn about climate change intensively, gaining knowledge through theoretical and practical activities, including a science project initiation. The project aims to encourage the youths to apply what they learned from the camp to conserve and develop natural resources and the environment at the community and national levels. The activities will lay a strong foundation for sustainable development and better quality of life in the future.

This year, 285 students from high and vocational schools across the country applied for the camp. Applicants were asked to produce a short video clip presenting their understanding of how climate change impacts their community and their ideas for solving the problem. Fifty students were subsequently selected to attend the camp.

The camp started with an online course, held on 15-16 October, to introduce the foundation, the problems, the causes, and the effects of Climate Change. The field trips are to take place between 18 and 25 October 2022 under the concept “Environmental Science – Learning Through Actions.” Students will be able to experience and understand the climate change’s impacts; and later, they will brainstorm to create an environmental science project. The first natural learning site they will visit is Ban Khun Samut Chin, Samut Prakan, where the locals are struggling to adapt to the coastal erosion problems which are becoming increasingly severe every year. Banpu employees will also attend this activity to learn about the impact of climate change.

Mr. Rattapon Sukhunthee, Head of Corporate Communications at Banpu Public Company Limited, said, “Throughout 17 years of Power Green Camp, we have witnessed a number of youths who are determined to take part in nature conservation in their communities. Banpu is pleased to play a role in enhancing the knowledge of environment and science for the students so that they can take care of the environment in the future. We are proud to see Power Green alumni grow up to become environmentally conscious adults who understand the value of nature around them. Even more rewarding is seeing our alumni return to pass on their knowledge to the younger generations at the camp. Therefore, we are committed to continuing Power Green Camp every year to nurture young environmental leaders who could become an important force in the nature conservation of our country. The project also aligns with Banpu’s vision to uphold the ESG principles we have adhered to throughout our 40 years of operation.”

Dr. Thunyapat Sattraburut, Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, said, “Global warming and climate change have long been discussed in the science and environment circle. Governments and private sectors worldwide also recognize the importance and have joined forces to alleviate this issue in a wider scale. However, the solutions to the problems require both time and cooperation from every party, particularly the younger generation, to produce concrete results. On behalf of the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies, Mahidol University, we are delighted to continue our 17-year partnership with Banpu. We hope that the students will grow up to be the leaders and convey the knowledge to their family, relatives, school, community, and society; so more people are aware of the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable coexistence with nature.”

After studying the coastal erosion of Ban Khun Samut Chin in Samut Prakan, the students will also learn about the problem of coastal change and the biodiversity at Amphawa, Samut Songkhram, before joining the mangrove conservation activity at the Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation and Education Center, Bang Tabun Wittayakom School, Phetchaburi. They will visit Khao Ngu Stone Park, Ratchaburi, where they will study the effect of climate change on the geological structure and external features of limestone mountains. The final visit will be to Kanchanaburi to learn about the changes in biodiversity in the forest. The camp will conclude with the environmental science group project competition guided by professors and lecturers from Mahidol University.
