Banpu Supports Bang Pakong Community in Receiving LESS Recognition “Tasa-Arn Subdistrict Waste Bank” Project Reduces Waste and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Banpu Public Company Limited, together with the Tasa-Arn Subdistrict community in Chachoengsao Province, has received a Letter of Recognition under the Low Emission Support Scheme (LESS) from the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO). The recognition underscores the success of the “Tasa-Arn Subdistrict Waste Bank”, a community-driven, source-based waste management model that reduces waste and greenhouse gas emissions while promoting a circular economy through the collection and sale of recycle materials. The project has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO₂e), reflecting strong collaboration among the private sector, government agencies, and local communities in advancing a low-carbon society.

Mr. Jirameth Achcha, Head of Corporate Services, Banpu Public Company Limited stated, ” “Banpu has been working closely with the Tasa-Arn community on waste management for more than two years under the Banpu Marine Debris Management Project. We have received strong cooperation from Mr. Sonchai Dangmee, Mayor of the Tasa-Arn Subdistrict Administrative Organization, and all local teams, particularly in establishing the ‘Tasa-Arn Subdistrict Waste Bank.’ Together, we have developed a source-based waste management system, with the community and government agencies serving as the core driving force. This initiative represents the development of community-level waste management mechanisms (WASTE) and greenhouse gas mitigation mechanisms, which can be further scaled and replicated in other areas.”

In addition to the Waste Bank initiative, under the Banpu Marine Debris Management Project, the company has installed nine waste-trapping net buoys, provided one innovative waste-trapping buoy. and supported the establishment of waste banks in three subdistricts—Tasa-Arn, Bang Teen Ped, and Sanam Chan—in Chachoengsao Province. As a result, more than18,029 kilograms of waste have been prevented from entering water sources, and greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by over 52,723 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kgCO₂e) in less than one year. These outcomes underscore the power of multi-sector collaboration in delivering systematic and effective environmental management.

The recognition awarded to the Bang Pakong community under the Low Emission Support Scheme (LESS) is granted in recognition of LESS’s approach to developing activity models that raise awareness of greenhouse gas emission reduction. LESS honors organizations, communities, and individuals with a Letter of Recognition (LOR) for their significant contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The selection process is based on technical and academic analysis and evaluation, combined with a support framework that links “givers” from the corporate and business sectors with “receivers” in society and local communities.
