Environmental Management
At a minimum, we ensure strict compliance with local environmental standards, laws and regulations.
To complement these, corporate performance requirements on environmental issues have been
developed to lead operations beyond minimal compliance to a greater level of environmental awareness
to demonstrate how serious we are in our commitment to preserving the ecology and minimize the impact
caused by our business activities.

In addition, Banpu works closely with local communities and governments in many instances to promote
better environmental conditions where opportunities exist.

For example, in the coal business, the concept of mine planning and environmental impact assessment
inclusive of land and resource utilization up to and including when the mine is closed is applied prior to
entering the area set aside for operations. Accordingly, land utilization is planned carefully to maximize
the preservation of the area in order to return it to pre-mining conditions. Most of our post-mine areas
are rehabilitated as soon as practical by using a special reserve fund, the ‘rehabilitation fund’ which is
taken out of our coal product sales on a regular basis.

In our power business, pollution prevention (e.g. the use of optimum coal quality with low sulfur)
is always a priority and is supplemented by eradication (e.g. the installation of an electrostatic
precipitator) to ensure the least effect on the environment. Every year, each of our power plants
issues plans for improvement projects that will assist in boosting the efficiency of environmental
management with cost savings.

These initiatives expand beyond our operations to include our stakeholders where possible. Examples
of this include the use of waste heat from electricity generation for energy supply for district heating
and the installation of pipelines to supply our fly ash directly to the adjacent cement factory with zero
dust emission.
